The Energy-Hormone Connection: What Reiki Has to Do With Nutritional Therapy And Why I Decided to Train as a Reiki Practitioner
As a certified Nutritional Therapist lifestyle coach and menstrual cycle educator, my mission has always been about more than just food and nutrients - it's about healing the whole person. Nutrition is the foundation of physical wellbeing, but the pathways to deep, sustainable change go beyond biochemistry: they include the emotional, energetic, and spiritual layers that shape the way we live, feel, and heal.
This is why, when I decided to upskill as a Reiki practitioner, it wasn't a random add-on - it was a deeply intentional step to expand my capacity to support women in their healing journeys.
Healing Is Not One-Dimensional - It's Holistic
In my work with women - whether it's balancing hormones, preparing for pregnancy, navigating postpartum or perimenopause, or simply reconnecting with your body - the most profound transformations happen when we address more than just symptoms.
Reiki complements nutritional therapy beautifully because:
• It supports energy balance: Reiki is an energy healing practice rooted in the idea that a universal life force flows through us, and that when this energy is balanced, the body can heal more effectively. This aligns with how we see nutrition: the body thrives when pathways - biochemical and energetic - are open and flowing.
• It encourages deep relaxation: Stress and tension disrupt digestion, hormonal balance, and overall health - yet are often invisible in conventional assessments. Reiki fosters a shift from the fight or flight state into a place of rest, allowing deeper nourishment and healing to occur.
• It supports emotional release and clarity: Healing isn't just physical. Women often carry emotional burdens - from unprocessed trauma to internalized societal pressures - that block health progress. Reiki gently helps release what the body holds so your nutritional work can take deeper root.
• It enhances mindfulness and self-connection: Being attuned to your body's needs - what it genuinely needs for nourishment, rest, movement, and joy - is a form of self-care. Reiki helps cultivate that awareness, which naturally supports healthier choices and a stronger relationship with your body and food.
The Science Behind Energy and Hormones: Understanding the Chakra-Endocrine Connection
While Western science and Eastern energy healing may seem worlds apart, there's a fascinating connection between the chakra system and our endocrine (hormonal) system. Dr. Amit Ray, creator of the Ray 114 Chakra System Meditation Course, has developed comprehensive research mapping how the seven main chakras correspond directly to major glands and hormones in our body.
This connection helps explain why energy work like Reiki can have such profound effects on hormonal balance, stress responses, and overall wellbeing. When we work with the chakras through Reiki, we're also supporting the glands and hormonal pathways that regulate everything from our stress response to our reproductive health.
The 7 Chakras and Your Hormones
According to Dr. Amit Ray's research, each chakra corresponds to specific glands and hormones:
1. Root Chakra
Glands: Gonads, Adrenal Glands
Related Hormones: Adrenaline, Cortisol
Function: Grounding, stability, survival
2. Sacral Chakra
Glands: Gonads Glands (ovaries/testes)
Related Hormones: Oestrogen, Testosterone
Function: Creativity, Reproduction, emotional balance
3. Solar Plexys Chakra
Glands: Pancreas, Adrenal Glands
Related Hormones: Insulin, Cortisol
Function: Mental power, digestion, self-confidence
4. Heart Chakra
Glands: Thymus Gland
Related Hormones: Oxytocin, Seratonin
Function: Love, compassion, emotional wellbeing
5. Throat Chakra
Glands: Thyroid Gland
Related Hormones: Thyroid hormones
Function: Communication, self-expression
6. Third Eye Chakra
Glands: Pineal Gland
Related Hormones: Melatonin, Serotonin
Function: Intuition, Perception, Spiritual awareness
7. Crown Chakra
Glands: Pituitary, Pineal Glands
Related Hormones: Endorphin, Melatonin, Serotonin
Function: Consciousness, connection to the divine, spirituality
Why This Connection Matters for Women's Health
Understanding this chakra-hormone connection helps illuminate why Reiki can be so powerful for women dealing with hormonal imbalances, fertility challenges, menstrual irregularities, stress-related conditions, and menopausal transitions. When we balance energy centers through Reiki, we're supporting the very glands and hormonal pathways that regulate these processes.
For example, work on the sacral chakra (Svadhisthana) directly relates to reproductive hormones like estrogen and testosterone - crucial for fertility, menstrual health, and hormonal balance. Similarly, balancing the root chakra (Muladhara) can help regulate stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which when chronically elevated, can disrupt every system in the body.
Why I Chose Reiki: My Personal Why
Years before I trained in Reiki, I walked a path many women know all too well...
I spent over three decades without truly understanding my body - until pregnancy brought me face to face with gestational complications, eclampsia, and a postpartum experience that left me overwhelmed and isolated.
It wasn't just the physical recovery that was hard - it was feeling disconnected from my body's wisdom, as if I were living in tension rather than harmony with myself.
That is when I began to recognise that optimal health isn't just biochemical - it's energetic, emotional, and spiritual too. And Reiki, with its emphasis on energy flow, intuition, and holistic harmony, spoke to the part of healing that sometimes words and food alone cannot reach.
How Reiki Fits Into My Nutrition Practice
My approach has always been whole-person and woman-centered. Nutrition is science, yes - but it's also an invitation to rediscover your body's intelligence and resilience. Reiki supports that invitation by creating space - literally and energetically - where healing can deepen rather than just inform.
Here's how the two work together in practice:
• As a complement to nutrition consultations: Reiki sessions can be scheduled alongside your nutritional therapy appointments. For example, a Reiki session before we meet can help calm your nervous system, making you more receptive to discussing sensitive health topics. Or a session after our consultation can help your body integrate the dietary and lifestyle changes we've discussed. When your nervous system is relaxed rather than stressed, your body is better able to digest food, absorb nutrients, balance hormones, and achieve restful sleep.
• Support during transitions: Big life changes - pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, chronic stress - often come with emotional and energetic shifts. Reiki supports these transitions gently, allowing your body to integrate change with more ease.
• Holding space: One of the most profound gifts in healing is feeling seen, heard, and supported without judgment. Reiki enables a nurturing environment where clients feel safe to explore not just what has gone wrong, but why - energetically and emotionally.
• Integration with nutritional goals: When energetic blocks are eased, women often find that making nutritional changes feels less overwhelming, more aligned, and far more sustainable.
Cultivating Presence: Simple Daily Practices for Mind-Body Connection
"To keep going, sometimes we need to allow ourselves to stop"
One of the greatest gifts of both Reiki and mindful nutrition is learning to be truly present in your body. When we cultivate presence, we can better hear what our body is telling us - about hunger, fullness, stress, energy, and what we truly need to thrive. Here are five simple exercises you can incorporate into your daily life to deepen your connection with yourself:
5 Exercises to Help You Be More Present
1. Crystal Focus: Hold a grounding stone (like black tourmaline, hematite, or smoky quartz) and notice its weight and texture. Let your attention fully rest on the physical sensation of the stone in your hand. This simple practice anchors you in the present moment and can be done anywhere - at your desk, before a meeting, or when feeling anxious.
2. Essential Oils: Inhale calming scents (lavender for relaxation, peppermint for clarity, or citrus for energy) and fully notice the aroma. Take three deep breaths, paying attention to how the scent affects your body and mood. Aromatherapy engages your limbic system, which regulates emotions and memory, making it a powerful tool for presence.
3. Intention & Affirmation: Set a daily intention or repeat an affirmation like "I am balanced and open to healing" or "I trust my body's wisdom." Say it aloud or write it down each morning. Intentions create a mindful framework for your day and help align your actions with your values.
4. Mindful Breathing (4-7-8 Technique): Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 counts, hold your breath for 7 counts, then exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 counts. Repeat 3-4 times. This breathing pattern activates your parasympathetic nervous system, triggering the relaxation response and bringing you into the present moment. It's particularly helpful before meals to improve digestion, or before bed to promote restful sleep.
5. Journaling: Write thoughts, sensations, or emotions without judgment for 5-10 minutes each day. Don't worry about grammar or structure - just let your pen move. This practice helps you process emotions, track patterns, and gain clarity about what your body truly needs. Consider prompting yourself with questions like: "How does my body feel today?" or "What am I grateful for right now?"
The key to all these practices is consistency over perfection. Even 2-3 minutes daily can create meaningful shifts in your awareness and wellbeing. Choose one or two that resonate with you and make them part of your daily rhythm.
A Common Thread: Healing, Space, Empowerment
Whether in nutritional guidance or Reiki, my goal is the same:
• To help women reclaim their health, their confidence, and their connection to themselves.
• To hold space for healing at every level - physical, emotional, energetic.
• To empower women to step into the optimal health they deserve, guided by intuition, evidence, and compassion.
